I would love to go to Nats this year. But if car isn't sorted by then, there's not much point.

I'm kind of hoping to maybe find a co-driver and split driving duties to and from.  I'm still a little bit on the fence about it.

For you on the fence folks that have never gone.

Just go.

Worth it even if you're not really class competitive?

My Google-fu skills seem to be lacking in finding the specific information and location for on-site camping...or is it just on your concrete paddock space?

There are maybe 100 (out of 1200) people out there with a legit shot at a class win.  Figure half the folks have a legit shot at a trophy.  Depending on what you mean by "class competitive", minimum half the folks there just aren't.

What they are there for is one hell of a week of autox vacation.  You see the best of the best in autox.  And that's in _all_ classes.  Ever see an AM car?  How about a full grid of them?  Like CAM?  There will be a bunch.  Etc.

Plus there's fun autox stuff to do pretty much every night.  There's the low key region tents that activity centers around, plus various real events.

Basically, consider it a week of autocrosser vacation.  And frankly, you'll likely have a better time if you go out intending to drive your best but not worried about how you place.

And yeah, camping is in your grid spot.  "Camping" mostly means "in an RV", though I'm sure there are some that are in actual tents.

There are 4 things wrong with going to nationals - Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa.

If it wasn't for that 16 hour drive, ONE WAY, I would go every year.

It's amazing to me to see that place where it is today. It's literally less than a mile from where I grew up. I remember when it opened I didn't think much of it - places come and go and there weren't many (or any) "tuning" shops. Being so close to Detroit and being flat, muscle was still the big thing and even if you were JDM, you were just doing backyard engine swaps (like my 1994 KLZE Probe) and buying "chips" for cars. So it was seen as like another rims/tint/car stereo kind of place by a lot of people in the community and was barely a blip on anyone's radar. After living out here for 11 years now to see how nationally recognized that place has become is phenomenal.

I'd like to make the trip to see how fun Nationals really is but unfortunately it's over Labor Day weekend. That's a no-can-do since it's my annual get-together with old military buddies.

Guess I'll have to start planning now to make it next year. Is SoloNats always over the Labor Day weekend?

Is SoloNats always over the Labor Day weekend?

Kinda sorta yeah. Well, it starts with the ProSolo over Labor Day weekend, but the actual Solo Champ portion event isn't until later in the week. Since I run STX, I actually don't need to be there until Wednesday afternoon - 2 days AFTER Labor Day.

Sadly, STP is Tues/Wed - so that means you'd have to arrive Monday evening - meaning a likely Sunday night departure.

Man, we're lagging. Not my chart, but we don't even make the list despite having one of the more populous regions.

We have 8 (plus others outside of the MSA) that are regulars. But still.  :-\

Someone from Austin put it together on a different site.

Since they switched to MotorsportReg, it just shows "city" instead of your region like it did with MyAutoEvents. But even then you've got variances all over the place. I know a lot of CPR folks that don't run CPR since they went to school there when they signed up. I'm AHR even though I live almost smack dab in the middle of the City of Pittsburgh.

I think we've all but decided that we're out for this year. Given that we've made 3 events with the car, and it's broken at 2 of them. I'm sure more will break now that we've shored up other components, so probably a bad idea to trailer all that way with things still squarely in R&D mode.

Also, there are only 79 spots left before the event caps.

I went to nationals in 2007 for less than $300. Total. Seriously. Here's how you can save some money...
1. Get a codriver to split the cost of fuel on the trip out and back. I chose Dan Tyger. He would buy gas at one stop, and I would buy the next, and so on. The Camaro got about 26mpg on the trip to Topeka pulling a trailer in the 75-80 mph range.

2. Get a sponsor. I know this is easier said than done, but if you know anyone with a small internet store, it may be worth it for them to spend a couple hundred to have their name/logo on a car at a national event. In my case, I have a retired uncle who was running a store out of his garage in South Carolina. I covered my car with his company name/logo and he covered my entry fee for the event.

3. Stay with a relative that lives close to the event. Probably not a realistic option for most anybody, but I have an aunt/uncle that live literally 1 mile from Heartland Park Topeka. So lodging was free. Unfortunately I don't have any family in Nebraska, so I haven't really entertained the idea of returning to nationals since nationals left Kansas.

I know the third option is a stretch, but you can save a good chunk of money with options 1 and 2.

I decided too late in the year that I had interest and don't have enough time to work out truck/trailer and all the other work/life logistics for this year. I am planning on going next year though.

I think I am going to forgo most the Cumberland schedule next year and try to go to some more serious events. Unless there is imminent rain I think I am going to the DC region event at Fedex this Sunday.

Unless you have a camel back that is filled with Pepsi and Makers Mark - DAN!

For those noobs going - you will need a bike or scooter.  Be prepared for weather ranging from 60 to 102 degrees.  I experienced both in the same week.

Drive fast (at Lincoln, not on the roadways) and be safe.  And bring back some hardware.

I'm leaving Saturday and stopping for the night at a friend's house in Illinois.  Then I'm leaving there at 6 am and I'm hoping to be on site between 3 and 4 on Sunday.  I think instead of rushing to try to get tech out of the way that day, I might just drop my rear wheels off at the Bridgestone tent to have my tires flipped while I stand in line for registration.

I'm heading out Sunday around 1pm (from North Park) - staying in the Quad Cities area Sunday night and making the last 5 hour leg on Monday - hoping to be there around 1 or 2pm Monday afternoon.

For those of you not following at home/work - shame on you.

Dan Ireland finished in the trophies (10th) in what I like to call murderers row class - SSR.
Figs couldn't lay off the cones and had to rely on hero third runs which let him finish in 19th.
Adopted son of steel cities, and teacher of autox, Sam Strano won SSR.

Alex Piehl landed just outside the trophies in 13th in HS for his first nationals.

Dan Sabol got a 35th place in FS avoiding the DFL at his first nationals which is hard to do.

Greg Maloy finished 2nd in CM.  John Ryan finished 13th.

I know I missed some people, so don't yell at me.

Tuesday morning I just couldn't put it together, the high speed and and high grip got in my head.  I kept pulling myself towards the sucker cones -- And yes, dirty boy.  Hit cones that I had to be next too so I'm not upset about it.

There is always 2018 =)

East course was crazy fast! West looks to be pretty quick too. The sweepers are road course fast lol.

Why did I wait this long to come here...

Our boys in DS did well.  Matt Luckow finished in 9th in his mini.  Alex Artayet managed to hang on to a trophy spot in 16th.  Chris Kavka finished 18th.  I know for Alex and Chris, this was their first nationals.

Matt should get extra credit because Seth Grogan's FRS roasted a clutch and Matt let him co-drive the mini.

Mark scroggs roasted the field by almost 1.5 seconds in a car that doesn't belong in DS (my opinion).  Mr. Scroggs would have won FS and placed second in BS with his overall time.  OUCH.  Can you say overdog.

Good job boys!

I had the pace on day 1 to battle for top 5, but a poor line choice on Run 3 cost me almost a second.

The front shocks decided they finally had enough on Day 2 (they've been blown and leaking fluid since we got the car). I drove better lines, but couldn't keep the car's rebound under control on a lot of the sweepers. Felt like I was driving a bucket of water.

Looking forward to next year.

Thanks for the kind words Joe! Chris and I felt pretty decent after day 1 and weren't too far off the pace excluding the Scroggs Camaro (More on that below). But the day two course we just never figured out. It was very hard to piece the whole thing together and then we didn't have enough fuel in the damn car... again... haha which killed my third run. Data between us showed we had 62.0 out there which would have moved us way up in the trophies. Both courses were absolutely amazing though and it was easily the most fun I've had autocrossing. Definitely had to adjust and get in that super competitive mindset again and having to chase down tenths to move up a spot or two was such a rush! We also had both the mens and womens pro solo champions in our class, how cool is that!?

THE SCROGGS CAMARO
Scroggs would have trophied in the following faster street classes AS, BS, CS
He would have been just outside the trophies in STX and STU
He would have won FS and CAMC

The only things done to the car are an alignment, wheels, and RE71R's + some amazeballs driver mod. On day one he stuck within a tenth of his fastest time and his decently fast co-driver was with the rest of us pedestrian drivers haha. Day 2 was pretty much the same thing.

I'll also say that while Scroggs' car had no prep, our car doesn't really have that much done to it either. We could put pimpier shocks on it, we could get a shop manual and see if anything can be done to get more camber. Also the 2018 WRX is coming and is definitely going to be faster than ours.

With that said, this car needs a home, it is just too awesome. He paid $20,000 for it new. It weighed in at 3180lbs on the scales at nationals, has 275hp and 295ftlbs of torque and has a limited slip differential. It has a 50/50 weight balance due to the engine being located so far back in that giant engine bay designed for a V8. It can get -2deg of camber and easily fit 275's on the 19x8.5 wheels.

So while I could see the car potentially in BS or CS, I think it's pretty cool having a $20000 car that's more fun than an FRS or BRZ be the car to have in DS. Especially since the twins are getting a spec class next year.

Word of advice: Don't do course walks while loopy on allergy meds

I also ran a camera on the right side of my car to check to see how close I was getting to cones.  The added benefit of it is that I was able to have some fun using RaceRender

The Camaro gets a bunch of aluminum parts cascaded down from the V Cadillac's....subframe, suspension etc.  Sort of ironic how anti-aluminum GM appears in those truck commercials.  I tested the old 1LE quite a bit and it's a great handling car for how heavy it is.  LOT of tire under that pig.  Not too shocked that the 4 banger is just as fast in an autox situation being so much lighter.
