Howdy,

I think we've all but decided that we're out for this year. Given that we've made 3 events with the car, and it's broken at 2 of them. I'm sure more will break now that we've shored up other components, so probably a bad idea to trailer all that way with things still squarely in R&D mode.

That just sounds like you have an SM category car?

Perhaps so. It's certainly behaving more like one when it works.

If you haven't registered yet - now's a good time to do it. Early registration ends in 3 days (Monday) and goes up to $300.

Also, there are only 79 spots left before the event caps.

Also, I think you only lose $20 if you register now and have to cancel before the event. If you register after the 7th and cancel before Aug 23rd there is NO REFUND.

Just booked my flight so I'm starting to get pumped!

You mean you don't want to spend 2 days in a car driving out there?

I think I'm actually saving about $500 in gas money by flying down their given the fuel mileage of the EJ.

I'm suddenly realizing how expensive it will be to drive the Mustang there.

Could always co-drive the FiST and split gas/tolls w/ me, haha. The only downside is that it has not even half the horsepower.

I would have co-drove down with Chris if I had the vacation days available to do so and I didn't want to get back to the kiddo as soon as possible.

Should have seen the costs the first time we towed the Corvette with the loaned vehicle and trailer; holy crap it was expensive...

Is there any sort of service people use to get their cars towed out there?

I looked into some, and the price was insane. Around $750 one way was the best quote received. Maybe someone else knows a better way.

I went to nationals in 2007 for less than $300. Total. Seriously. Here's how you can save some money...
1. Get a codriver to split the cost of fuel on the trip out and back. I chose Dan Tyger. He would buy gas at one stop, and I would buy the next, and so on. The Camaro got about 26mpg on the trip to Topeka pulling a trailer in the 75-80 mph range.

2. Get a sponsor. I know this is easier said than done, but if you know anyone with a small internet store, it may be worth it for them to spend a couple hundred to have their name/logo on a car at a national event. In my case, I have a retired uncle who was running a store out of his garage in South Carolina. I covered my car with his company name/logo and he covered my entry fee for the event.

3. Stay with a relative that lives close to the event. Probably not a realistic option for most anybody, but I have an aunt/uncle that live literally 1 mile from Heartland Park Topeka. So lodging was free. Unfortunately I don't have any family in Nebraska, so I haven't really entertained the idea of returning to nationals since nationals left Kansas.

I know the third option is a stretch, but you can save a good chunk of money with options 1 and 2.

Only 21 spots left! Early Entry also closes in just a little over 3 hours!

Wish we could get guys like Alan and Coffman to go.

I decided too late in the year that I had interest and don't have enough time to work out truck/trailer and all the other work/life logistics for this year. I am planning on going next year though.

I think I am going to forgo most the Cumberland schedule next year and try to go to some more serious events. Unless there is imminent rain I think I am going to the DC region event at Fedex this Sunday.
