M240xi
« on: August 07, 2017, 08:45:52 AM »
I have been frothing over this car that I can't afford.
M240xi all wheel drive, 330hp.  Unfortunately, it only comes with a shiftable automatic.  It is a heavy car, so not good for autox.
I was getting tired of shifting anyway.  If somebody comes across a bag filled with money, it's mine.

I don't know what you're talking about, frothing over cars one cannot afford.

Pretty sure we all do this? :)

My wife had an M235i for over 2 years, although she refused to have all wheel drive so we went to Cleaveland and found a real one with Rwd. Was an awesome car. We test drove the XI version and it was just missing a little something. Never regretted getting Rwd. With good snow tires she got around perfectly fine.

How about this one: https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=460757702

It isn't the M240 but it is still a hell of a car for the price. This one has been open in my browser for a few days....

I think local autocrosser Mario Scaramouche just picked this up if I'm not mistaken. He'll be at PCA Saturday at D42 Sunday with it.

I'll be at D42 this sunday as well.  Dibs on a funrun if he is OK with it.
Maybe I'll just sit in it.  Driving one may make me go get one.

Saw Mario at D42 and the frothing is over.  I didn't drive it.  I wouldn't do that to someone with a brand new toy and not a lot of run off room.  Mario says the front tires are only 7 1/2 inches wide.  You are not going to get much grip out of those.  The M2 has 9 inch wide fronts and 10 inch wide rears and is 8 to 10 grand more than an M240xi (ouch).

I still will co-drive it, you know, if I HAD too.   :P

Speaking of D42 - that was a pretty fun trackcross course.  8) No surprise F Street took the top 3 spots in PAX out of a 131 car field.

In the low 80s on the front straight and mid 70s going into the slalom.

Speaking of that slalom - that was probably the most fun one I've ever done. First off, that entry speed was ridiculous. The kink in it was a nice feature. It was incredibly long, and I'm always a fan of optional slaloms. But the best part? The wide offsets coming in. I was trail-braking to the 3rd or 4th cone. I'm used to trail-braking in one direction for one turn, not doing a right>left>right>downshift to 2nd>gas to shorten the kink>4 more cones to go type of slalom.

Also, loved the camber on the start of the big right before the slalom straight. On my first run, I started the initial turn in and the car was pushing a bit more than expected and I didn't think it was going to make it, but as soon as you get into that little dip it just grabs like crazy.

Was also really surprised at how well that big parking lot like turn worked. I thought I was going to have to 2-part it, but it was such a nice smooth turn on throttle - it just felt like magic every time.

No video. SoloStorm update screwed up my camera settings and didn't realize it until after. I'm sure no one is interested in my audio, haha.

Some jag-off out paxed me.  And I say that with Steel Cities pride.  Nice drive Alex.
I had the 12th fastest raw time.  Alex had the third fastest raw.

Thanks - you too! You were beating me up until my last run, which I guess is easy to do with a nice soft DS PAX ;).

I actually thought my last run was a slower run when I came through the finish since I was a little too early on the brakes in 2 spots, but I made up for it in the slalom by timing my downshift right. I couldn't keep it in 3rd in the slalom, the older WRXs don't have much balls in 3rd gear at 40 MPH - that's only around 2800 RPMs. With the kink in the middle of the slalom which kind of changed the pacing, I needed to get back on throttle. The FA engine WRXs (like yours) still has gobs of TQ down low. I don't start getting respectable until around 3500 and not truly powerful until 4500. Thankfully, the rest of the course let me put down the power I have.

We need our resident FS drivers to come to one of these and clean house in PAX, haha. We have a few BS folks too that would probably do pretty darn well there.

But yeah, if it weren't for that 1 slalom to slow things down a bit (since everything else was a straight away or sweeper), we wouldn't have had a chance. The closest sub 265hp car to top PAX was 3.3 seconds back. 3.3 back at the last Steel Cities event would have been around 51st/52nd or so. Not every course is a Miata course (but every course is a Corvette course).

I was also surprised at how many people were lifting in that front straight. They were early apexing the first cone which meant they couldn't get around 2 & 3. I know distance is king, but that had to be killing times for some folks.

Both times I've been there I worked the course while FS was driving. The last event, I could tell Tim Carritte was really moving before I even knew who he was or what times he was running (he won PAX and was up 1.2 seconds over 3rd place). Despite being a big car (2016 Chevy "Impalibu" SS), he's really smooth with it and always on the edge of the traction circle. Even with Steel Cities best in the right car on those courses, he'd be a really tough out.

Speaking of FS - Mario Scaramouche (the kid w/ the M240xi) did pretty well. The car freaking moves in a straight line. It's still his first year of AutoX. He was 6th of 15 in FS. Not bad.

With the fast speeds was a lot of heavy braking. With hot brakes comes hot wheels. With hot wheels comes hot tires. Thank goodness the BFGs like the heat. I was having issues airing them down between runs because of how much heat was coming from them. I was getting some weird noises driving back to paddock after my last run, like a clicking noise. Thought I had broke something. Wheels were so hot I couldn't change them yet. Even after 30 minutes the lug nuts would boil water on contact (literally). Once I finally changed the wheels - all 10 of my front lugs were loose. My hub-centric rings were essentially putty. Rears were fine.

I downloaded the latest SoloStorm update while sitting in grid - and the update reset my video settings. So while I have data, I don't have video (just audio w/ a picture). Either way, I'm done writing this book (sorry) - here's someone else's video.
