Howdy,

I like the waterfall...

I was playing with small apertures and long shutters on this Christmas tree shot:

[attachmentid=2669]

and was playing with lighting the glass ornament w/a flashlight on the ornament shot:

[attachmentid=2670]

Neither is composed particularly well or anything, just playing around.

Sam - the waterfall is a nice shot...  What was that about 1/8th second?

Jimmy - Yep, the rest of us can see it just fine.   :P

I think for the bandwidth impared that a limit to a couple pictures per post should be set...  But that said, here we go!  :)

Well, I've taken to this Canon S2 IS like a crack whore to crack...  The short list would be that or the one Eric just got, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 - which probably takes slightly better (sharper) pictures and costs a little less...  Near as I can tell the only two things to ask yourself are:  do you care about video (I want that feature; intend to mount it in the car next year) and do you care if it has it's own rechargable battery to go dead at the wrong moment or do you want it to use standard AA batteries (I do; so put another check in the AA using Canon column for me)...

Short of DSLR's - I'd say those are the two to look at.

Edit:  Head to head comparison here:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons2is/page8.asp

Edit again:  And yeah - I find myself taking shots that each camera can do well...  When I didn't have a zoom I was taking lots of landscape shots - go figure.  :)

Here are a couple from the point and shoot:

Howdy,

One thing I'll say on this...

The DSLR's are a _lot_ more reasonable in price these days and you're sorta guaranteed to have something that'll work for most any picture you want to take, provided you're willing to get the lenses...

I've got a Digital Rebel XT w/the kit 18-55 lens and a cheap Tamron 70-300.  The 70-300 is basically required for motorsports stuff.  And when I start feeling limited by that lens, I can get a 70-200 F2.8 w/IS... :-)

All that said... The S2-IS seems pretty damn cool.  I'd like to see a comparison between that and the Rebel sometime.

I don't think you'd go far wrong with either.  I liked the DSLR route because money I put into lenses would remain over time if I upgraded bodies, plus the added versatility of being able to use different lenses.  But... You give up things like video & using the lcd as a viewfinder.

After a ton of reading and driving to various stores to get some hands on with each model it came down to the Canon S2 and the Panasonic FZ5. I choose the FZ5. I was looking for a 10x or greater zoom, image stabilization, a simple mode, and as small a case as possible. I needed the easy mode and image stabilization so my wife will use the camera as she has no interest in learning how to set shutter speeds and stuff and is notorious for taking blurry pictures.

Basically the Canon is a more substantial camera that feels a little more solid but it is bigger and heavier. I liked the idea of the AA batteries that the S2 has but I just bought an extra L-Ion battery so I wouldn't have to worry about a dead battery in my FZ5. I took 400 pictures on the battery before it needed charged and the spare was only $20. The Canon has 640x480 video while the Panasonic has 320x240. I was more interested in the photo ability and since the Panasonic is $100 less I went for it over the S2. If they were the same price I probably would have bought the S2 but considering the cost difference I am happy with the FZ5.

This thread has some good advice on the subject:

Kinda an apples to oranges thing, but as the features on the compact guys keeps getting better, I think you'll see some reviews start to happen.

My dad just splurged for the Nikon version of that lens.  Its a same...70-200mm 2.8 w/ VR (vibration reduction, which is equivalent of the Canon IS).  He also got a 17-55mm 2.8 shortly thereafter.  They do some amazing things...but they're also very heavy, as my neck will protest.

I added some pics on top of the thread.  Some were taken through a windshield, which is the slight distortion on some of 'em.  I have the full 8MP version if you're really curious.

Howdy,

Damn Ethan, you've got some nice shots.

Do you just travel around to exotic locations all the time or what?  :-)
