I've driven both gens of r32 on course and I much prefer the 1st gen. I'm glad they are making it a manual only car as well. If they can shed some lbs I think it's going to be great. I'm sure it's a personal preference as well but as much as I like the Wrx I'd probAbly spend the extra cash for the r32 as well. Going to miss the grunt of that v6 though

I promised myself that if Subaru ever brought back the STI sedan I would get one.  At 34k it is in the BMW 328xi range of pricing.  If VW gets the pricing right, around 32k, I might have to buy the Golf R in sedan form.  The Subaru STI is 3300 pounds at 305 hp.  The VW Golf R is 270 hp at an unknown weight (I don't know, but Trevor does).  If VW prices it above 36k I'll go with the Subaru.

The engine in my '08 STI spun a bearing about a year ago and I would still prefer it over the VW.  Cost asside, what it comes down to is preference.  Personally, I happen to value the functionality of the STI over the interior quality and potentially "good" reliability of the VW.

...but then I realize that the VW should probably be compared to the WRX instead (as most of you mentioned).  That might be a more fair comparison and more of a difficult decision.

From a performance viewpoint (pricing asside), I think it's worth noting the 335xi in the comparisons.  I'm actually considering that as a replacement to the STI.

If you compare it to a WRX that has 287 hp at 28k.  I doubt (but hope) VW can price the new golf r in the 28k range.

I am just looking for a fun AWD car that gets decent gas milage that doesn't cost 50k (caddy cts, lexus, bmw, infinity) that the wife won't mind riding in.  And when I mean "buy", I mean in two years after my SI is paid off.  Of course, by then, there will be another "gotta have it" car (BMW 1 series M would be really nice).

I would have to sell my Miata (7k if anyone is interested) an then I would only owe them another 12k.  After the beating from my wife, I wouldn't be able to drive anyway.

I will definitely go test drive one of these. I've never had a chance to drive an R32 to compare but I have driven a new GTI.

The GTI has a noticably more upscale interior as compared to my Civic Si. Power is very good especially down low. Resale value is also very good. I didn't get one because I thought the body styling was a bit too bland. It was definitely on the short list for my latest daily driver though.

We test drove just about everything in the 30 to 40k range when looking for a fun car over the last year. Mustang, Camaro, EVO X, BMW 335i, STi, etc. I know everyone may not agree but the STi is an incredible car. 4 season usability, puts a grin on my face every time I get in it, outstanding resale value, and based on the experience with my 2005, seemingly unbreakable (in stock form).

The EVO X is probably great on a track but we found it to be uninspiring in around town traffic as is has Hondalike low end power. You really have to run it out to feel the power.

Anyway, its hard to lose with an AWD car that you can tear through a snowstorm and still have fun with an an autocross event. The more manufacturers that decide to make one the better.

BMW 1 series M coupe...drooool.  I would definitely buy one of these among many other cars if I won the lottery.

Ugh.  I cannot get over the body style of the 1 series.   With or without the M facelift.     It's good from a head on front shot, but the side profile is terrible.

Now an E89 Z4.....
