Name this old Autox venue

OK - who recognizes this parking lot where the SCCA, NHSCC and Steeltown Corvette Club used to hold events?  You old guys, let the you guys guess before you chime in.

Seems like only animals would dare to Auto-X there.

Howdy,

Saw my first ever autox there.  Tim somebody was in my college fraternity and was driving someone's british mumble mumble (some kinda Triumph maybe?).    Started out on a run and _boom_!!  IIRC, it turned out the swaybar was making contact with the tire and chewed through the sidewall.  :-)

I hate when that happens - tires are expensive.  That would have been 1989 with my good friend Tim Skwiat taking my TR4 out for it's maiden voyage after he put on a new suspension for me (Tim was your frat buddy?).  Who knew that the rear sway bar would move that much?  Good thing we had a spare tire.  The gas station next door mounted it for us while we nailed down the sway bar, and that was the last time I had a problem with the TR4 until it started eating rear axle seals in 1992.

It went on to win DSP nearly every weekend after that running against Walt Barre (in a different BMW), another guy in a BMW 2002 Tii, and of course, Walt Peterson in his big Healey.  I actually drove it to Baltimore on BFG R1 race tires to run in a CMC event where all entrants got to race a Consulier.

The Tastee-Freeze across the street is now an Ice Cream Station Zebra (looks nice) and the gas station is still there and open for business.  The lot seems to be in good shape except for some bumps in the pavement.  We had to stop running there because more and more people started going to the Zoo.  They had us restricted to either March or November dates, however the lot was empty today at 1pm on a really nice day.

I never saw any autocrosses there, but I did see my first one at the upper lot at Village Square.  It must have been sometime in the summer of '86 based on my recollections of what car I was driving and who I watched it with.

Wow - so much for that idea of trying to run there again.  It was not full at all on Saturday.  The lot is pretty bumpy anyway.

Back in the old days, I remember one time when we decided to rent a car to do a challenge between several of us.  We had done that many times before.  The format is that we each drive our own car, and then also take 3 runs in the rental to see who is faster.

One Sunday in late September 1990, and it was Darren DiSimo's turn to provide the rental car.  We got there about 1/2 hour before registration was to open so that we could get everything ready.  I had my Solo Vee there since it would be the last event I could run the car before the end of the season (only North Park events remained).  This was a Steeltown Corvette autocross, and while the 20 or so SCR and NHSCC regulars were hanging out in the parking lot waiting for registration to open, the Corvette Club quietly packed up and left the parking lot - without even talking to us (it was drizzling at the time).

Pitt used to test FSAE cars there in the early 2000s.  Apparently one of the neighbors weren't into cars since they called the police every time.  :-\

Unless that person has since moved or gone deaf, I'd venture to guess they haven't found a taste for the hobby in the past decade.

I thought it was going to be a picture of Stuebenville or the County Airport.
