Hats off to everyone for a great event. Really loved the course Chris put together too. It seemed smaller walking it but it was a blast once out there. I was able to drop into the high 37s on my last run, which I think is as fast as I could have expected in my ES Miata.

Looks like FastTrack was another success, I think I heard that was the most people to ever attend! Good to see some new faces out there and hopefully a few of them caught word of SteelCities too.

The Course was really fun and made great use of the lot, good job Chris. It looked simple on the walkthrough but there were tons of places to lose time if you didn't get it right, which happened a lot for me.

Also, thanks for showing me up in my own car Mike! :P Good driving!

I'm going to claim the same...  Working on the salvageable ones, although the only shots I took were from the cover of shade under a popup tent, so nothing spectacular, imho.

One to keep you waiting....

Great event Morgan! It was great seeing everyone and catching up Sunday! Had the chance to co-drive my friends Camaro SS. I was shocked at how well the car felt on course, I think once he adds a set of A6s to his existing setup and gets some seat time he might be able to give Paul a run for his money in ESP. See everyone at the SCR event on July 8.

It was definitely a great event.  I hope to spend a little money on some of the pics that were taken of me to keep helping the cause.  Kurt, the two pics you put up of me looked awesome!  It makes me look like I was cooking on course but I felt very slow.

I should have given myself a good night of sleep.  I had too many things planned to do.  Amber had no energy to race and I barely did.  We had ordered tickets to the World of Outlaws Late Model show in Tyler County, WV and could not even stay for the final race because it was too late.  I think they finished the racing around 3:30 am on Sunday.

I am glad I was apart of the event though and congrats to Tim Ward for smoking me.  I had nothing for him and I can't wait to start back up in September.

I hope to have a new set of Hankook RS-3s or Ecsta XS at my disposal but we will see.  Anybody else have any other street tire suggestions?

Dan, having run both...get the Kumhos.  Although the Rs-3s are a stickier tire and better for the money, the climate we live in with the oh-so-many rain and cold events will leave you wondering where those tires are you bought.

I must be the only one with a poor opinion of the XS.  I'd go for the star spec over the XS.   FWIW.

I agree.  My opinion is only poor based on my own vehicles with them, I can't say they're poor after driving Jenny's Spyder and riding in Ralphs GTI...Maybe they changed compounds since we bought them :P

Howdy,

If the Hankook grips worse than the XS in cold or wet weather, it must be one fucking awful tire.

2012 HDSA Fast Track to a cure autocross - 77 STC fastest run

There are also two things I missed on.  One was a HUGE thanks to John & Frank for being their early and letting me have my way with the course design.  And everyone else who got their early to get the trailer stuff unloaded.  And my apologies to anyone who stayed to clean up.  It was my own damn event and I didn't make it over in time since I kept stopping to talk to people  ::)

A late short review from me... ;D

I had a great time, great to get to see everyone again, and thanks to Don for letting me drive the Miata.  Car is a hoot.  Hopefully I can get in the car again soon and actually give some input in regards to setup, I was too busy with my four runs trying to pull my head out of my ass.

First run I made in the car was a 34.0x, which would've been FTD all day had I not gone on the outside of a gate.  I had Michele in the car with me for the next run, pushed a bit too hard through the back section, slowed to a 34.5, but clean.  Kicked her out of the car for the third, slowed to a 34.8, with me feeling like I was faster everywhere except for the fact that on run 2 and 3 I turned the last section into a big drifting mess.  Just came in too hot, and on the course if you did that you were fucked for everything else.  So I told myself on the last run I was at least going to match my first run, so I slowed down a bit through the first half, stayed tight going up the hill, and took the back section so slow it was painful (like the first run), 34.0x.  We also made a tire pressure adjustment which I believe helped the car, still think there was way more in it.

So now I got to be the starter while I waited for Randy and Ethan, who were right there where I was all day to beat me.  Of course they both ran towards the end of the heat for extra torture.  Paul who was also driving the Miata laid down a hell of a run with a 34.3, it was awesome to see him knock so much time off after having a struggle with his third run, great job Paul.  In the end, Randy had a car problem, and Ethan got rained on, so I got to keep FTD.

I would like to personally thank Morgan for putting on a great event, and for bringing eye candy along with him.  Made the event that much more enjoyable, and thanks to Chris for an awesome course.

The hankooks chatter when cold not so much the wet but the events that i ran them that were wet it was also cold.  Horrible, jay had them on the boxter at the same time we were fighting the same problems.  They were so bad i could barely get out of the driveway in the camaro with them on when it was cold they would just spin as soon as the clutch let out until they got warm enough then they would chatter up the driveway.

Thanks for the input.  I will probably lean towards the Kumhos because I like when we run in the rain.  Just to note, I was running a 225/45/17 Continental Extreme DW.  IMO these tires worked well for me, they were almost unbelievable in the rain which is why I was always good at the events it rained on us.  I had more confidence in the rain than the dry.

During the dry events, they tended to understeer more and rolled over on themselves.  If you had money to have a couple sets of tires then these would be a must have rain tire and have something for the dry but most of us do not have that option.  I will be looking to get 235s now since the wheels I bought are 17x8s.

Thanks again for the advice.  Your opinions go right along with Grassroots Motorsports which makes me feel better about the magazine.

The XS's fucking suck in the rain.  Seriously.  Conversely, the Conti DW's are apparently one of the best rain tires, but give up a little in the dry.

What about Direzzas or one of the other hot street tires?  It seems like you probably want something a little more well rounded... Does that exist?

I used both the XS and Star Specs...in my opinion they are SO close in (dry, warm) performance that I wouldn't spend the extra on the Dunlops.  Throw in the cold and/or rain and I don't have an opinion.
