Howdy,

Thanks for the input.  I will probably lean towards the Kumhos because I like when we run in the rain.  Just to note, I was running a 225/45/17 Continental Extreme DW.  IMO these tires worked well for me, they were almost unbelievable in the rain which is why I was always good at the events it rained on us.  I had more confidence in the rain than the dry.

During the dry events, they tended to understeer more and rolled over on themselves.  If you had money to have a couple sets of tires then these would be a must have rain tire and have something for the dry but most of us do not have that option.  I will be looking to get 235s now since the wheels I bought are 17x8s.

Thanks again for the advice.  Your opinions go right along with Grassroots Motorsports which makes me feel better about the magazine.

The XS's fucking suck in the rain.  Seriously.  Conversely, the Conti DW's are apparently one of the best rain tires, but give up a little in the dry.

What about Direzzas or one of the other hot street tires?  It seems like you probably want something a little more well rounded... Does that exist?

Mark

I would normally agree with you except a certain GS car is dominating rain/dry on those tires this year...My 4 year old set sucks in the rain and although sucks in the dry they are better than the kumho optimos on the stock wheels :P

From what I've read on teh internetz the Direzza is the most well rounded of the bunch for AX. It heats up quickly and is supposed to be halfway decent in the rain, not good like the DW and Toyo R1R but decent. It can go off on hot day though, aka something like this past weekend, and GRM testing says it isn't as the RS3 and XS for HPDE and TT.

From personal experience the RS3 is the bees knees in the heat, anything above 60F with the sun out, and they work really well with a fat car(3200lbs+). I had a very good season on them last year and gave Brian and Megan a run for their money in their STX Direzza equipped RX8, even beat them a few times :P. 80% of the Steel Cities events take place in summer months where you are getting good weather. I guess North Hills events start earlier so you might miss out on some of that warmth but at least it gives you a good excuse for being slow.

Stay away from Toyo's unless you are in 2000lb honda or miata.

I'm on the Kumho's now, they squeal like street tires but seem to be doing alright. I'll refrain from judgement until after the season is over or until the stock street tire guys start kicking my butt. :P

For what it's worth, with my limited AutoX experience and no experience on any other tires, the Star specs are great in the wet. In the 14 inch side there really isn't much choice though.

Cheerleaders parking lot is too small to race in, otherwise we'd crush our current participation numbers  ;D

Haha, I think we could make it work and it would be nice to have a lunch buffet near by! I hear they have great... nevermind not going to go there.

For a feature, I'm just going to go with some old school Honda lean:

Oh yeah, and I hope this car comes out to play again.  He was really working it over with the green machine:
